Expedition the Land of the Jade
Hpakant, the famous jade producing zone is situated 159 km (7 hrs drive) north west of Myitkyina. The surrounding areas are totally covered by mountains and the population is about 100,000.Summer is only 3 months from the mid of February to the end of April. Rainy season is from May to September and winter is from October to February.
There are two routes to Hpakant from Myitkyina, Karmine route and Hway Khar route. Hway Khar route is only for the summer time. Landscape attraction is very nice but the road is heavily pothole and bumpy. It is not recommended travel to Hpakant during the monsoon May to September as heavy floods are usual. By using the Hway Khar route to Hpakant, across the huge Indaw Gyi Lake where the rare birds dwelling. The Lake is bigger than the Inle Lake and the scenery is enchanting.
In Hpakant, there are several types of jade mines such as the mountain cut type, river closed type and man-made type. Gold processing works can be found along the Uru River.All the business depends on the jade market. Majorities are jade mine workers. All the foodstuff and goods are carried from Mandalay.Various kinds of tribe come and work in Hpakant as jade miners or dealers. Kachin, Mine Tar and Shan tribes can be found there.
Mogok is a city located 200 km north of Mandalay and 148 km northeast of Shwebo. The city is composed of two towns, Mogok and Kyat Pyin. Mogok is 7km long and 3km wide. It is situated in a valley surrounded by a large number of mountains. Kyat Pyin lies about 19km from Mogok. Tourist travel to the area is not permitted.
Mogok and other villages nearby have been famous since ancient times for its gemstones, especially ruby and sapphire, but semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli, garnet, moonstone, peridot and chrysoberyl are also found. The gems are found in alluvial marble gravels by means of panning, tunneling and digging pits by hand. There is little mechanization of the mining. The gravels derive from the metamorphosed limestones (marbles) of the Mogok metamorphic belt. 90% of the world's rubies come from Myanmar. Gems are sold in markets in Mogok. However, foreigners require special permits to visit the town.

Mandalay – Mogok – Mandalay 4 Days / 3 Nights
Day 01: MANDALAY – MOGOK (by car)
Early morning, pickup you at the place you live in Mandalay and drive to Mogok. It is 5 – 6 hrs drive from Mandalay. On arrival, check-in at the hotel. Then, take the permission for visiting Mine from Ministry of Mine and followed by sightseeing to San Taw Win Gem mine. Next, visit to Sulamani Buddha Image in Aye Zeti Monastery compound for overview of Mogok. Finally, back to hotel and free at leisure for the rest of the day. Overnight at the hotel in Mogok.
Day 02: MOGOK
After Breakfast, visit Aung Chan Thar Market (Ruby Market) and a short visit to Lapidary (for learning how they cut, polish and paint the stones). Then, drive to Pein Pyit Village. On the way, you can enjoy the city’ view from the View Point. After that, visit to Peik Swe Garden Hta Pwe: the place of gems trading. After spending some time in there, proceed to Mogok Private Gem Mine and Ruby Dragon Gem Mine. On the way back to hotel, make a visit to Chan Tar Gyi Pagoda to enjoy the landscape and how generous Myanmar people by looking the donation box full of various kind of gem stone (or) Bee Taung, where you can enjoy the sunset. Overnight at the hotel in Mogoke.
Day 03: MOGOK
After Breakfast drive to Kyat Pyin to visit Daw Nan Kyi Taung, Kyauk Pyatthat, Gem Mine, Hta Pwe. In the afternoon, visit to Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, where famous gold and silver thrones are enshrined and Mogok Sayadaw Kyaung where you can see the relic of Venerablle Monk. Your evening will be free at leisure. Overnight at the hotel in Mogok.
Day 04 : MOGOK – MANDALAY
After Breakfast, back to Mandalay. On the way, you can make a visit to Kin Chaung (small waterfall and pool) and Pyi Oo Lwin. In the evening arrive Mandalay and then transfer to hotel.
